From Bland to Brick - My First Tiling Project

When we added two new rooms to our home—a sunroom and an office—I didn’t originally plan to take on a tiling project. Our contractor handled the sunroom flooring, but there was one small problem—he hated the brick tile I had chosen. He complained about it the entire time, and honestly, I had enough. So, when it came to the office, I decided to take matters into my own hands.
I told him to just prep the space—level the floor with concrete board and install the heating system. From there, it was all me.
This was my first time tackling a tiling project, and I braced myself for a challenge. But to my surprise, it wasn’t as difficult as I had imagined! The process was straightforward, but there was one part that took the most time—cutting the small pieces around the corners. Why? Because I had chosen a herringbone design, of course!
The pattern was absolutely worth the effort, but precision was key. Measuring, cutting, and laying each tile in its perfect place required patience. However, once the tiles were set, grouted, and sealed with a couple of coats, the result was nothing short of stunning.

The Most Sought-After Room
Stepping back and admiring the finished floor, I knew I had made the right decision. The office went from a basic new addition to the most sought-after room in the house! The warmth from the heated floors, combined with the elegance of the herringbone pattern, gave the space a luxurious yet cozy feel.
This project proved that sometimes, taking on a challenge yourself leads to the most rewarding results. Not only did I save on labor costs, but I also gained a new skill and the satisfaction of knowing I did this.
Would I tile again? Absolutely. Maybe not immediately, but this experience has definitely given me the confidence to take on future projects.
